New Work: Looking Up 4 and 5

I decided to add one more design to this series and to try some different value ideas. The first piece was more an experiment in using a majority of similar hues with just a few spaces of a complimentary color. The second piece is more an experiment using darker, more closely related values and with the larger areas being similar hues and temperatures.  I like them both for the different feelings they evoke (for me). All five pieces remind me of the colors of the landscape on the recent hike that I took at Red Hills in Jamestown, CA.

Hope everyone has a lovely Valentine's Day today, no matter what you choose to do.
Thanks for reading and commenting,

  1. I'm enjoying your experiments. How will you use the knowledge you are gaining from these? I don't know if that is a dumb question. Will you set out on your next series with a specific repeat of the color qualities juxtaposed?

    1. Carol,

I think that question is just fine. It has made me think which is good right? So, truthfully, I don't know if I will do anything specific like you mentioned. I do know that the color choices and experiments with value placement help me to get more experience with using proportion which is a major component of how I think about design. For this particular set of colors too I learned about the overall impact of a set of values. I chose to paint my papers this time in 5 values. Some were closer together than others, like values 3 and 4 didn't have that great a step between them. As I worked those mid values together I could see how that closeness was affecting the work.

So, I'll take that knowledge forward for the next set of colors. Hope that makes sense. Glad that you asked!

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it! I reply back in an email if you are signed in and I can see your address. Otherwise I will post the reply here under your comment. I tend to cut and paste my emails too so that others can experience the back and forth which I think is integral to blogging.
