New Work: Near and Far

One of the things I did in the past two weeks was to reorganize the garage. As a consequence of straightening up, I created a better space for taking photos. I am able to set up my tripod and a ladder to prop the painting on. Along with these adjustments, learning my camera better, and taking photos in the AM, I hope to have better images of my work.

I worked on this piece yesterday and it is based on my photos, sketches and memories of walking at Lake Alpine. Last summer I took a trip there in order to go walking. When I finished with my "hike" I sat on the shore of the lake to eat my lunch and to sketch. The direct view across the lake was quite lovely. For this piece I simplified and shortened the view and the surrounding shore and rocks. I am pretty happy with the brush stroke texture that I was able to get too. Right now, that texture is a way for me to connect in a "mentally tactile" way with my environment. Memories can become sort of smooth and faded. I like the idea of reconnecting to that smoothness via texture, if that makes sense. There is a lot to it, really.

The other thing I am working through now is developing a personal sense of balance in my pieces. I see other artists who present such a skillful balance in their work. It's enviable and I know it's achievable. With each piece I do I feel like I learn a little more.

OK, it's Monday. Hope everyone's week is off to a good start. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it! I reply back in an email if you are signed in and I can see your address. Otherwise I will post the reply here under your comment. I tend to cut and paste my emails too so that others can experience the back and forth which I think is integral to blogging.
