New Work: Full Circle to Form a Square

Full Circle to Form a Square
20" x 20"
painted paper collage on board
The titles that I give these pieces are often funnier in my head. This phrase has been part of my vocabulary for quite some time. I have no idea where it came from or really, what it might mean. I have always used it in a funny way (to me) to express the idea that oftentimes when we are searching for something, we try a lot of different things only to wind up back where we started our search. With me, I started making art when I began quilting. I never though thought of it as an "art" form. It is though and one with a very long and revered history. I have jumped around so much over the past 9 years that it was funny to me that with this piece, I felt like I was coming home. It clicks for me now: the order, the variation, the sheer versatility of the geometry involved. There is an orderliness to this, in my mind anyway, that is extremely appealing to my personality. It's all of the possibilities that can be had with squares, rectangles, and color. If only I can be smart enough to figure things out. I am not sure about the smart part but I sure enjoyed making this piece.  By the way, the origin of the phrase, "full circle to form a square" might actually be in geometry! Here is a link to what I think the phrase really means.

To anyone still reading, please have a wonderful and thanks filled holiday. We are all blessed.

  1. this piece feels like an invitation of exploration. The warm colors invite me in, there are numerous doorways in my mind's eye and corridors to explore. I'm enjoying this immensely. Maybe my eyes keep making a circle, I don't know the meaning, only that it appeals to me very much.

    1. Carol,

I like the idea of circles within squares so if your eyes are going in circles I think that is a good thing! I get doorways and corridors also along with the idea of a cityscape of sorts. The whole piece was really fun to make-it felt like I was building something, if that makes sense.

I hope you and your family are having a good Thanksgiving. Thank you as always for your visit and comments.
      Take care,
      Libby

    One of your best.
Have a great Thanksgiving, my friend.

    1. Julie,

Thanks so much! That is a nice set of compliments. I really had a good time making this piece-it came together easily-and so maybe that is what shows up.

Hope you had a good Thanksgiving and aren't too stuffed:)
      Thanks again, Libby

  3. Wow Libby love this friend. The colors- overlapping of shapes makes this awesome. Did follow the link too. Your title made me curious. Being rather dull when it comes to higher math think I will just enjoy the term you used. Have a super day.

    1. Debbie,

Math pretty much makes my eyes glaze over! But, that expression has been with me for awhile and I didn't really know what it meant.

I was pleased with this piece. The simplicity of it and the colors really grabbed my attention. Hopefully I can continue on with the ideas.

Thank you again for your comments. Hope all is well.
