Video and Abstract Experiment

I really couldn't say why the colors are so poor on these two photos. Yesterday I worked on an idea that I had about the arched doorways in our home. In the video, I describe the source of inspiration for the painting and some of the things that I learned about the design principle of "pattern".  Additionally, there is no focal point for this painting. That was deliberate on my part. It was interesting to think of the different shapes and how to place them on the canvas. At first, I found it hard to get away from my sketch. I kept wanting the painting to look like the sketch and as I progressed, there seemed to be other elements to add that helped to pull things together, in my mind. For one, I added a lot of dry brushing and because the paint stayed wet for a bit, I was also able to blend colors into one another.

I did forget to add this one observation. Maybe someone else has noticed it too? There are blogs that I have read where the person will state that they did such and such to their painting and added this or that design element; say for example that they worked on a specific color relationship. You look at the painting and think to yourself, "Well, maybe you meant to do that but that sure isn't what I see!" Anyone have that happen? In the above video, I had that in mind so I hope that what I tried to do actually comes through.

OK, hope everyone has a creative Wednesday. Thanks for reading, watching, and commenting.

  1. I enjoyed the video with all the information. Your color harmony is beautiful in this piece and it was neat seeing how you responded to the painting as you went along. Listening to that little voice inside us and knowing 'no fear' is to be encouraged.

  2. Were you talking about a painting or a quilt? Sounds the same to me!

  3. Libby! These videos are so great! You are sort of Vlogging..right? I like this approach! It was fun to listen to the reasons you painted this. COOL! I'll be back to catch up, because I see you've done other videos recently. Great job!

  4. You crack me up. I just love your honesty and I love the endings to your videos where you always make me laugh.

When you put this on its side I see some great abstract sailboats on the right. Maybe you could use the shape with the shapes of a pier in a future painting.

  5. What a great painting ... and I can see it as a beautiful quilt too, maybe your painting inserted into a larger similar quilt?! It has such a beautiful ethereal feel.
