| River Study 2 Libby Fife |
On Friday I was out and about with my sketchbook and paints. This time I went to see the Calaveras river which runs over by Hogan Dam. The dam and park are run by the Army Corp of Engineers out of Sacramento and because of that, there are well marked trail heads and little areas in which to walk and fish. This area is over by the quarry right next to a little bridge where I have seen people fishing. I just parked my car, pulled out my tri pod stool and sat down to record some color notes. I know many painters are excited by color and technique or something along those lines; nothing wrong with any of that. I wonder though about having a connection to what you are seeing and doing. What I am finding out is that it is really the landscape itself and the feelings that it evokes which spurs me on. What is my personal reaction to what I am seeing and how can I most accurately describe and express that through paint? I just want to be able to record that somehow. So, these trips to collect color notes and descriptions of what I think about what I am observing are important in helping me to connect the dots.
OK, I hope everyone had a creative weekend. I have a potentially busy week ahead so I am going to get crackin'! Thanks for reading and commenting.

I really like this style of painting alot! Who can't relate somehow to a flowing river? Really nice!!
ReplyDeleteLove this! You really captured the sense of rushing water. Great!
ReplyDeleteReally liking your two river studies, Libby. Loving that texture!

I love them both...you must have liked being there---that's what comes across
ReplyDeleteLove these two! Extremely different from your architectural pieces. I used to paint with a palette knife. I always loved the freedom and spontaneity of it.
ReplyDeleteLove your river studies, Libby, especially the first one! This technique is so different from your usual style. I have to say - I love the smooth, graphic quality of most of your paintings because they are so still and peaceful. These, on the other hand, seem more emotional and lively. I honestly like both approaches very much!! Beautiful work!
